At the start of the summer season, the Municipality of Jbeil (Byblos) has announced a series of measures aimed at ensuring the safety, cleanliness, and comfort of its beachgoers.
Elise Merhej, a member of the Jbeil Municipal Council, issued a clarification that explained that these decisions stem from the municipality’s responsibility to protect visitors and maintain the city’s unique and welcoming environment. “Jbeil has some of the largest and most accessible beaches in Lebanon,” Merhej said. “The series of regulations we’ve introduced aim not only to guarantee the safety and security of visitors but also to keep pace with the cultural identity of the city and welcome people in the cleanest and most beautiful way possible.”
Among the new rules is a ban on bringing animals to the beach—an action Merhej said was prompted by a number of incidents in previous years. “Not all animals are tame,” she noted. “The beach is the municipality’s responsibility. In case of any negligence or accident, we would be held accountable, which is why such measures are essential.”
Food restrictions were also clarified. While items like cold sandwiches, chips, and chocolate are still allowed, picnics that involve grills or barbecues, as well as alcoholic beverages, are now prohibited due to the potential risks they pose to public safety. “We want families and groups to enjoy their time without the added hazards of open flames or uncontrolled alcohol consumption,” Merhej added.
A few days ago, the Municipality of Jbeil issued a detailed list of updated beach regulations, emphasizing cleanliness, order, and public decency. The use of hookahs, alcoholic drinks, and picnic setups is strictly banned. Swimming is prohibited after 8 PM, and beachgoers must wear proper swimwear to access the sea. Personal umbrellas, chairs, and tables are only allowed if rented from the designated areas, and visitors are expected to dispose of their waste properly to help preserve the shoreline. These measures aim to protect the environment while fostering a respectful and inclusive public space for everyone.
To ensure the enforcement of all these regulations, municipal police officers will be deployed along the beach, alongside additional security personnel and lifeguards to safeguard all visitors. Violators will face fines imposed by the municipality as an added incentive to comply.
To make the beach experience more accessible and enjoyable, Merhej confirmed that chairs and other comfort-related items will be available for rent at fair, regulated prices.
But beyond regulation, Byblos is preparing to come alive with events and festivities. “‘Jbeil will not sleep’—that’s the motto we’re working with,” Merhej said with enthusiasm. “This season is full of promise. We have a lineup of projects and festivals that will run all summer long.”
“We warmly invite all Lebanese to make Byblos their main destination this summer,” she added.
