According to the Traffic and Vehicle Management Authority (commonly referred to as "la Mécanique") and data from the research firm Information International, only 289,000 motorcycles were officially registered in Lebanon as of 2022.
However, this number is believed to represent just 20% of the actual motorcycles on the road. In both 2023 and 2024, over 50,000 motorcycles were imported annually.
When factoring in unregistered vehicles and those operating outside administrative oversight, the real number of two-wheelers in circulation is estimated to exceed 1.5 million.
What explains this massive gap?
Many motorcycle owners opt not to register their vehicles to avoid paying administrative fees, which amount to around $200. This cost does not include the mandatory insurance premium, which starts at $25.
