Egypt is preparing a major energy project to export electricity to Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon via a new submarine cable through Jordan, with an initial capacity of 2,000 megawatts.
The announcement follows a visit by Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly to Amman, where he met with his Jordanian counterpart to discuss expanding regional energy cooperation, particularly in the field of electricity interconnection. While details remain limited, Cairo has confirmed plans to extend its network beyond Jordan.
Currently, the Egypt–Jordan interconnection relies on a 500-megawatt submarine cable operational since 1999. According to Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat, the two countries are working to quadruple this capacity to 2,000 megawatts in the coming years.
The stated goal is to begin electricity exports to Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon by 2029, a milestone that could represent a turning point for Lebanon, which is grappling with a severe energy crisis.
