For the first time since the outbreak of the Syrian civil war in 2011, Syria has completed an international bank transfer via the SWIFT system – a symbolic step toward reintegration into the global financial network.

The announcement came on Thursday from Central Bank Governor Abdelkader Husrieh, who revealed in an interview with Reuters that “the first commercial operation was carried out between a Syrian and an Italian bank.”

“This is just the beginning and the way is now open for other transactions,” he added.

The transaction, while modest in scale, represents a major technical and diplomatic milestone for Syria, which has remained largely cut off from the international banking system for over a decade due to sweeping Western sanctions and ongoing conflicts.
