During their monthly meeting held on Wednesday in Bkerke, presided over by Maronite Patriarch Bechara Rai, the Maronite bishops declared that Lebanon is facing a rare opportunity for recovery, one that must not be missed.
In their closing statement, the bishops urged Lebanese officials to take tangible steps to restore state authority and implement long-awaited reforms. They expressed gratitude to Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states for their ongoing support, hoping such backing will aid in Lebanon’s reconstruction and revive its role within the Arab world.
The bishops also highlighted the renewed diplomatic ties between Lebanon and several Arab countries following the election of President Joseph Aoun and the appointment of Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, marking a turning point after years of political estrangement.
Commenting on the first three phases of municipal elections that began in early May, the bishops welcomed the generally smooth process despite minor irregularities. They encouraged newly elected councils to prioritize lawful and secure local development.
On a humanitarian note, they voiced serious concern over deteriorating conditions in Roumieh prison, calling on authorities to act swiftly and humanely to address issues of overcrowding and poor sanitation.
The bishops further welcomed US President Donald Trump's recent decision to lift sanctions on Syria, seeing it as a potential step toward regional stability, economic recovery and the safe return of Syrian refugees to their homeland.
Finally, they condemned the war in Gaza, ongoing since October 2023, called for an immediate ceasefire and urged the international community to push for a just and lasting solution that ends the suffering of civilians.
