Caretaker Minister of Public Works and Transport Ali Hamiye signed an agreement in Paris with THALES, a leading French company specializing in aerospace, defense and security, which is also responsible for the Secure Boarding Management System (SBMS).

Under the agreement, THALES will oversee the implementation of the SBMS, an advanced solution it designed, to streamline and secure travelers’ entry into Lebanon.

The initiative aims to enhance security measures at Lebanon’s air, land and sea borders, falling under the jurisdiction of the General Security Directorate.

Minister Hamiye explained, “This system facilitates the efficient movement of travelers across all border points, bolstering national security and ensuring compliance with laws and regulations. It verifies travel documents and visas using state-of-the-art electronic scanning technology.”

The system will be linked to both local and international databases, including Interpol’s records and passenger information systems, enabling authorities to identify individuals flagged as dangerous or wanted.

Hamiye also highlighted the need to upgrade the existing system at Rafic Hariri International Airport, which was developed by THALES.

“Software updates and new solutions are necessary to address technical gaps that have emerged during its operation,” he stated.

The signing ceremony was attended by key officials, including Acting Director of General Security General Elias Bayssari, Director General of Civil Aviation Fadi Hassan and the Director of the General Security Office at the airport, General Johnny Sissa.
