Caretaker Minister of Public Works and Transport Ali Hamiye posted on his X account that contractors affiliated to his ministry had initiated work to restore and reopen the Masnaa crossing, a key border point between Lebanon and Syria.
Masnaa serves as a vital conduit for the transit of people and goods between the two countries, playing a pivotal role in their economic and commercial interactions. It holds significant importance for Lebanon's imports and exports. However, the crossing has faced criticism for facilitating smuggling and illicit trade, particularly in fuel.
It is worth noting that on October 4, an Israeli airstrike targeted the road connecting Lebanon to Syria via the Masnaa border crossing, resulting in a 4-meter-wide crater.
The Israeli military accused Hezbollah of using the crossing for weapons smuggling, urging the Lebanese government to conduct rigorous inspections. This allegation was swiftly refuted by Minister Hamiye.
Subsequently, on October 22, the same crossing was subjected to another raid.
Moreover, following previous bombings along the eastern and north-eastern borders, the Israeli Air Force struck, on Tuesday night, all bridges at the crossing points in northern Lebanon linking the country to Syria (Wadi Khaled, Arida, Abboudiyeh, Dabbousseh).
