The German Ministry of Foreign Affairs called on its nationals on Wednesday to "leave Lebanon immediately," as reported by AFP.
"A deterioration of the situation and a widening of the conflict cannot be ruled out, especially after the assassination of the Vice-President of the Hamas political bureau, Saleh al-Arouri, in Beirut on January 2, 2024. This applies particularly to the southern regions of Lebanon and the civilian areas south of Beirut," reads the Ministry's website.
The warning came after a meeting of the German government's crisis unit on Wednesday. Germany issued a travel warning for Lebanon last October, following the outbreak of war between Israel and Hamas.
The Canadian government has taken a similar step, advising its nationals living in Lebanon to "book a flight out of the country" and "avoid the area along the borders with Israel and Syria."
According to the message addressed to Canadians living abroad, the recent clashes "could lead to an escalation of hostilities in Lebanon" and thus threaten their safety.
