On the eve of Lebanon’s 82nd Independence Day, President Joseph Aoun visited the command of the South Litani sector at the Benoit Barakat barracks in Tyre, accompanied by Army Commander General Rodolphe Haikal.
Message to Officers and Tribute to Fallen Soldiers
Addressing the officers, President Aoun congratulated the army on the occasion of Independence Day, noting that “traditional celebrations are suspended this year due to the circumstances the country is facing.”
He emphasized, “I have come today to the South to reaffirm that this cherished region is always in our hearts. The army, which protects the people of the South as well as all Lebanese citizens, remains steadfast in its positions and committed to defending national dignity, sovereignty, and independence. It upholds these principles, regardless of the campaigns of slander, doubt, or incitement it may occasionally face.”
The president also praised “the army’s exceptional role, particularly in the South and in the Litani sector,” paying tribute to the 12 soldiers who have fallen since the implementation of the current security plan began.
President Aoun further commended General Haikal and his team for their dedication and commitment in carrying out the army’s missions.
Visit to the Operations Center and Overview of Military Activities
President Aoun and General Haikal also toured the operations room, where the army commander welcomed the president and highlighted that “this visit, on the occasion of Independence Day, confirms your constant support for the army and your attention to the South and its residents.” He added, “Today, we renew before Your Excellency our commitment to preserving Lebanon, its sovereignty and independence, and to protecting its civil peace.”
Colonel Rashad Bou Karroum, head of operations for the South Litani sector, gave a detailed presentation, supported by maps and statistical data, on the current situation in the sector. The briefing focused on the ongoing actions to implement the army’s operational plan, particularly the securing of weapons and installations in accordance with the government’s decision to centralize arms under state control. The overview also covered the organization of posts, permanent and temporary checkpoints, and patrols maintaining security and stability across the region.
Brigadier General Nicolas Tabet, sector commander, summarized discussions from the “mechanism” committee meeting and reaffirmed Lebanon’s firm stance on defending its sovereignty.
