The United States announced new measures on Tuesday to restrict the movement of the Iranian regime’s delegation attending the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, reinforcing its maximum pressure strategy on Tehran.

The State Department said the restrictions will prevent Iranian officials from accessing wholesale clubs, luxury stores and other non-essential areas in New York. Delegates will be limited to travel strictly necessary for conducting official UN business.

“We will not allow the Iranian regime’s clerical elites to enjoy a shopping spree in New York while the Iranian people face poverty, crumbling infrastructure, and dire shortages of water and electricity,” the statement said.

According to the State Department, the action underscores US determination to stop the regime from exploiting diplomatic travel to obtain goods unavailable to ordinary Iranians. “Today’s actions affirm the United States’ unwavering commitment to supporting the Iranian people in their pursuit of accountability and a better life,” the statement added.

The State Department emphasized that the security of Americans remains the top priority and reiterated that the US will not allow the Iranian regime to use UNGA as an excuse to promote its “terrorist agenda.”
