Lebanon and Syria are set to establish two joint committees to tackle three major issues affecting relations between the two countries, judicial and security officials said, according to the Associated Press.
The committees will focus on the fate of nearly 2,000 Syrian prisoners currently held in Lebanese prisons, locating Lebanese citizens who have been missing in Syria for years, and resolving disputes over undefined shared border areas.
On Monday, a Syrian delegation, including two former ministers and the head of Syria’s National Committee for the Missing, visited Beirut to begin discussions.
The new Syrian administration, led by President Ahmad al-Sharaa, aims to “turn a new page” in relations with Lebanon and is preparing for potential visits by Syria’s ministers of Foreign Affairs and Justice, though no dates have yet been set, according to a Lebanese judicial official and two security sources who spoke to the Associated Press.
