Progressive Socialist Party (PSP) leader and Lebanese MP Teymour Joumblatt spoke out on Friday with deep sorrow and frustration over the recent violence in Sweida, Syria. He called for peace and unity in the wake of the tragedy.

“We are going through a very sensitive time, filled with sadness and anger over what has happened in Sweida,” Joumblatt said. “We must remember that countries are not built through violence. We strongly condemn the crimes committed in Jabal al-Arab.”

The violence, which erupted on July 13, quickly spiraled into a week of fierce clashes between local Druze fighters and Bedouin tribes. The toll was devastating: reports suggest around 1,400 people, many of them Druze civilians, lost their lives, and large parts of the region were left in ruins.

Throughout the crisis, Joumblatt has repeatedly called for calm and dialogue. In earlier statements, he urged all parties to respect the ceasefire and work toward a lasting political solution within the framework of the state. He stressed the need to listen to the people of Sweida and ensure their safety.

The PSP has also advocated for an international investigation into the events and encouraged a national conversation among Syrian communities to promote reconciliation and prevent further violence.
