Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea responded to Hezbollah’s leader and Secretary General Sheikh Naim Qassem’s latest speech, describing it as “unacceptable by all standards” and warning that it represents a direct threat to Lebanon’s government, parliament, and constitutional institutions.
In a statement released on Saturday, Geagea said Qassem’s remarks also targeted the presidency, the prime minister, and “every free Lebanese citizen.”
“If Sheikh Naim assumes that there are no longer free Lebanese citizens in Lebanon, then he is gravely mistaken,” Geagea said. “And if he believes he can impose an authority he does not in fact possess over these citizens, then he is mistaken again, and again, and again,” he said.
Geagea stressed that at this sensitive juncture, the majority of Lebanese stand behind their constitutional institutions, particularly the president and prime minister, whom he said are working with patriotism and determination to restore state order, rebuild Lebanon’s ties with its allies, and regain international support.
Calling the current moment a “foundational stage,” Geagea pledged that his party and its allies would spare no effort to defend Lebanon’s institutions and prevent any attempt to derail the government’s course.
