During a tour of Baalchmay and Aley alongside political and religious leaders, former Progressive Socialist Party leader Walid Joumblatt addressed the regional situation, warning of a “great conspiracy” whose outcome remains uncertain.
Joumblatt stressed that in light of the painful events unfolding in the region, Lebanon’s role is limited. “If anyone thinks we can help or bring change, they are engaging in an adventure,” he said.
He called for safeguarding national unity and avoiding sectarian strife, urging that communities in Mount Lebanon maintain neutrality and act in their own best interest.
Rejecting slogans such as “unity of the tracks,” Joumblatt instead emphasized “a single track—national unity in Lebanon, coexistence with all and the finality of the Lebanese state.”
He advised, “When nations clash, protect your head. We must preserve ourselves and Lebanon and avoid interfering in others’ affairs. Each has their own capabilities and wisdom to decide their fate.”
While affirming his support for a united Syria, he noted that Lebanon’s priority should be its own internal stability, as outlined in the Taif Accord, and addressing pressing economic and social issues. Joumblatt also praised the Lebanese Army’s efforts to assert sovereignty nationwide, saluting the soldiers killed in the recent Tyre explosion.
