President Joseph Aoun chaired a ministerial and security meeting on Friday morning at the Presidential Palace, primarily focused on the situation in Lebanese prisons and the aggravating issue of overcrowding.

The participants discussed urgent measures to address the saturation of detention facilities, particularly concerning judicial procedures, applicable legislation, and accommodation capacity. The need to establish a legal framework to accelerate trials was also emphasized.

Present at the meeting were the Ministers of Defense, Interior, and Justice, as well as the heads of the country’s main security and judicial institutions.

Security was also addressed, notably potential sectarian tensions due to the ongoing clashes in Syria’s Sweida between Sunni Bedouin tribes and the Druze community.

President Aoun discussed the matter with Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri, among other issues.

Separately, President Aoun received the Russian ambassador, Alexander Rudakov. Their discussions focused on bilateral relations and ways to strengthen cooperation in various sectors.

Ambassador Rudakov also delivered an official invitation from Russian President Vladimir Putin to Joseph Aoun to participate in the first Arab-Russian summit, scheduled to take place in Moscow on October 15. This summit aims to enhance multilateral cooperation between Russia and Arab countries in political, economic, and security matters.
