An emergency meeting in solidarity with the Druze of Sweida was held on Wednesday in the village of Sharoun, in the Aley district, at the invitation of the religious authority of the Druze community in Lebanon.
Numerous dignitaries, religious leaders, and members of parliament gathered around the Sheikh Akl, Sami Abu el-Mona. In his speech, Sheikh Anwar el-Sayegh, speaking on behalf of the religious authority, condemned “the tragedy befalling our brothers in Jabal al-Arab, particularly in Sweida.” He described the ongoing violence as “acts of barbarism that only a conscience devoid of all morality could justify.”
“We appeal to the conscience of the world, if any still exists, to put an end to these barbaric acts. What this regime (led by Ahmad al-Sharaa) is doing has no basis in any law. We reject aggression, whether it comes from us or is directed at us. We live with dignity, and we die with dignity,” he declared.
Emphasizing the unity of the Druze community across borders, Sheikh el-Sayegh called on Lebanese Druze to show restraint toward displaced Syrians and to remain faithful to the ancestral values of the community.
A statement issued at the end of the gathering underscored the unity of the Druze people—whether in Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, or elsewhere in the world. The text denounces the attacks on the Druze of Jabal al-Arab, “the stronghold of the historic leader Sultan Pasha al-Atrash,” and condemns the violence, summary executions, and humiliation of religious leaders, describing these acts as “in violation of all human and divine law.”
“The Druze community has historically been a force for peace, firmly committed to Syria’s unity and Arab identity. It is imperative to contain the strife that is undermining the country’s cohesion,” the statement continued, calling on the international community to pressure the Syrian authorities to halt the massacres in Jabal al-Arab, particularly in Sweida.
“We are at a historic crossroads that may redefine not only the fate of this region but also the future of Syria as a whole. The slogans of unity and justice must now be translated into real action on the ground,” the statement concluded.
