As discussions continue over the document submitted by US envoy Tom Barrack, Lebanese authorities are still awaiting Hezbollah's official response to the comments issued by the Lebanese side.
According to local broadcaster Al-Jadeed, a Hezbollah representative met on Tuesday with Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri and handed him what was described as a “partial response,” containing a series of observations and proposed amendments to the US text.
Ali Hamdan, Berri’s representative, conveyed the notes to the presidential committee, which discussed them two days ago. An official response is expected today.
On June 19, Barrack presented a six-page US proposal outlining a phased disarmament of Hezbollah and other armed factions by the end of the year, in return for an Israeli withdrawal, international reconstruction aid, financial reforms, a UN-supervised prisoner exchange, and enhanced relations with Syria.
Hezbollah is expected to deliver its final response to the Lebanese amendments on Thursday through Speaker Berri.
The joint presidential committee is expected to reconvene today to review the official response and finalize Lebanon’s position.
Meanwhile, a meeting of the Quintet group – comprising the United States, France, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Egypt – is scheduled to take place at the US ambassador’s residence in Awkar, where efforts will continue to shape a final response to Barrack’s proposal.
