Ahead of Eid al-Adha on Friday, Lebanon’s General Security has increased its personnel at key border crossings to handle the expected surge of Syrian nationals returning home for the holiday.
Authorities are bracing for a significant rise in departures in the coming days, particularly from the Arida, Qaa and Masnaa crossings, the only operational points at present. The Arida border post reopened on Tuesday, following an announcement by Syria’s General Authority for Land and Maritime Ports. The agency noted that the reopening comes “despite ongoing restoration and maintenance work,” in order to ease movement for the holiday.
As part of the preparations, 75% of military personnel assigned to border posts have been mobilized to ensure efficient processing and maintain a steady flow of departures. The goal is to handle the large crowds quickly and smoothly.
This increased deployment comes amid signs of gradual stability returning to several regions in Syria. Many refugees, previously hesitant to cross back, are now choosing to return, at least temporarily, to reunite with family and celebrate Eid in their hometowns.
General Security’s move is seen as a proactive step to prevent delays, ease pressure on checkpoints and ensure a safe, orderly return for those making the journey.
