The Lebanese road safety organization YASA has issued an urgent appeal to Interior Minister Ahmad Hajjar, calling for a comprehensive national road safety plan to address the alarming deterioration of traffic conditions in Lebanon.
In a statement issued Tuesday, YASA stressed the “immediate need for effective and practical measures” to curb the rising toll of road accidents, which pose a direct threat to citizens’ lives and safety, while also causing severe economic, social, and tourism-related losses.
While applauding efforts to enforce traffic laws and improve infrastructure, YASA underscored the equal importance of cultivating a new generation that is well-educated and disciplined in road safety principles.
In parallel, the organization reiterated its decades-old demand to integrate traffic safety into school curricula and called for an overhaul of driving school programs to include detailed educational content on traffic systems, the dangers of speeding, distracted or impaired driving, and the importance of seat belts and child safety seats.
Furthermore, YASA proposed enhancing the “Tell Me and Show Me” component of driving tests to cover basic car maintenance as part of safe driving practices.
The statement concluded by urging authorities to adopt these recommendations within a national strategy, emphasizing that quality education is the most effective way to reduce road fatalities and injuries.
