Lebanon’s Foreign Minister Youssef Rajji has reportedly summoned Iran’s ambassador to Beirut, Mojtaba Amani, following controversial statements made by the diplomat on social media, according to the al-Markazia news agency.

The Iranian ambassador’s remarks, posted on X (formerly Twitter), were viewed as politically sensitive in Lebanon’s volatile internal climate. In his posts, Ambassador Amani denounced international calls for disarmament, calling them a “blatant conspiracy against nations.”

“While the United States supplies the Zionist entity with the most advanced weaponry, it prevents other countries from arming their own forces and exerts pressure to reduce their arsenals under various pretexts,” Amani wrote, referencing Iraq, Libya, and Syria as examples of countries weakened by such pressure.

The ambassador also emphasized Iran’s commitment to the principle of military deterrence, calling it “the first line of defense for sovereignty and independence,” and accused the West of double standards in regional security matters.

The comments have sparked concern in Beirut, where the question of arms—particularly those held by Hezbollah—remains at the heart of national and international debate. Critics saw Amani’s statements as a breach of diplomatic norms and interference in Lebanon’s internal affairs.

If confirmed, the summoning of the Iranian ambassador would represent an unusual show of assertiveness by the Lebanese Foreign Ministry, as the government seeks to balance its fragile domestic politics with pressure from both regional allies and Western partners.
