The Higher Judicial Council met on Tuesday under the leadership of Judge Souheil Abboud, marking its first session since October 2024. With newly appointed members, the Council aims to relaunch judicial operations after years of political deadlock and institutional paralysis.
Judge Abboud thanked President Joseph Aoun, PM Nawaf Salam and Justice Minister Adel Nassar for swiftly filling judicial vacancies. He also called on judges to uphold their duties with integrity and independence, despite Lebanon’s ongoing challenges.
The Council established criteria for future judicial appointments – prioritizing integrity, competence and seniority – and proposed partial appointments to complete the makeup of top courts.
Other decisions included setting up indictment chambers, reviewing death penalty pardon requests, and consulting on judicial appointments to the Court of Justice.
