
Lebanon ranked 68th worldwide and 9th among Arab countries in terms of cost of living, according to the report published in April 2025 by Numbeo, the world's largest participatory database on prices and living conditions.
With an index of 38.84, Lebanon is in the top third of the global ranking, based on prices observed in 139 countries and compared with those in New York, which serves as a benchmark with an index set at 100. In concrete terms, this means that the cost of living in Lebanon is around 38.84% of that in New York.
In addition to the overall cost of living index, the report also takes into account four other key indicators: rents, shopping costs, restaurant prices and local purchasing power.
On a global scale, the British Virgin Islands top the list, with an impressive index of 98.43, making it the most expensive country in the world to live in.
In the Arab world, the United Arab Emirates top the regional ranking and rank 30th worldwide, confirming its status as a country with a high cost of living. It is closely followed by Yemen (37th worldwide) and Bahrain (38th).
