Former Prime Minister Saad Hariri called upon “moving away from the militia mentality to that of a state that accommodates everyone, provided its Constitution is respected, its laws are abided by, its institutions are preserved, and its independence is defended.”

His statement comes on the eve of the fiftieth anniversary of the outbreak of the 1975 Lebanese Civil War on Sunday, April 13. Hariri pointed out that “our country is still suffering from absurd wars, open crises and daily Israeli aggression.”

“Today, we are all called upon to take the lesson from that war that destroyed our country and claimed the lives of the best of our youth,” Hariri said, adding that the most important lesson learned from the pains and tragedies of the civil war is the need “to get off the bus of individual and sectarian interests and ride the bus of legitimacy towards a just and capable state.”

Sunday, April 13 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the Lebanese Civil War, which claimed over 150,000 lives and lasted for 15 years, ending with the signing of the Taif Agreement in 1989, which brought the war to a formal close.
