Israeli reactions surfaced on Sunday, coinciding with the funeral of former Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah and Hashem Safieddine, held in Beirut’s southern suburbs.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that “the fighter jets flying over Beirut send a clear message: whoever threatens and attacks Israel will meet death.”
In a message posted on X, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar remarked that “the images of Nasrallah’s funeral illustrate the crossroads Lebanon is facing: either remain under Iranian occupation represented by Hezbollah or take the path of liberation and reclaim its freedom.”
Reacting on X, the spokesperson for the Israeli army, Avichay Adraee, also claimed that this funeral was “not just a farewell, but rather a show of force and an assertion of identity, where Lebanese flags were overshadowed by Hezbollah and Iranian militia banners as if the Lebanese state had never existed.”
“But what irony! Hezbollah found no other place for the funeral (…) than the Camille Chamoun Sports City? A man whose era was marked by the Lebanese flag! How has Beirut, once a symbol of sovereignty, become a stage where the flags of a faction pledging allegiance to Iran fly, while the national flag, meant to unite all Lebanese, is absent?” he added.
