The Lebanese Army Intelligence detained 25 suspected rioters for their involvement in the attack on a United Nations peacekeeping convoy and the protests that took place on Friday, Interior Minister Ahmad Al-Hajjar announced following an emergency meeting of the Central Internal Security Council on Saturday morning.
Al-Hajjar condemned the attack on UNIFIL, calling it "a crime and completely unacceptable." He emphasized that "investigations will continue seriously, and we are fully committed to pursuing the perpetrators." He also noted that, in addition to the 25 individuals held by Army Intelligence, one suspect is in the custody of the Internal Security Forces.
"I have instructed the army and security forces to tighten security measures on the ground to maintain order and protect citizens," Al-Hajjar stated, underscoring that "blocking roads is prohibited."
Meanwhile, units from the Lebanese Army's Strike Force carried out extensive raids in the southern suburbs on Saturday to arrest those suspected of involvement in Friday's attacks on the airport road.
Dozens of Hezbollah supporters blocked the road leading to Beirut airport in the southern suburbs of the capital, a stronghold of the pro-Iranian movement, for the second night running on Friday.
They were protesting against a decision to ban the landing of two Iranian aircraft.
