Caretaker Interior Minister Bassam Mawlawi announced that “a draft law for the reconstruction of the country has been approved by the Council of Ministers,” before specifying that this draft will be submitted to Parliament for approval.

Speaking from the city of Tyre, where the Council of Ministers meeting was being held, Mawlawi added, “We are in a phase of consolidating Lebanon's legitimacy, and the country is committed to the ceasefire agreement and UN Security Council Resolution 1701.”

In this context, he thanked Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri for having succeeded, together with caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati, in protecting the country, particularly the southern sector. To this, he added, “We will closely follow the nation-building process launched by the government today, in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution.”

Mawlawi went on to say that “the security situation in Lebanon is very delicate” and saluted “the efforts of the security forces, whose posts have been partially or totally destroyed by Israeli strikes.”

Commenting on the situation in Syria, he said, “We have given instructions to all the security forces to carry out their mission at the border between Lebanon and Syria,” noting that “the laws are strictly applied there concerning the entry mechanism of any person coming from Damascus.”

Mawlawi also criticized the absence of the caretaker Minister of Defense, Maurice Slim, from government meetings.
