Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati and Caretaker Minister of Public Works Ali Hamieh met on Thursday at the Grand Serail to discuss damage assessment, debris removal and reconstruction efforts.
Following the meeting, Hamieh stated that representatives from various concerned bodies, including the Council for the South, the High Relief Commission, the Council for Development and Reconstruction, Khatib & Alami, as well as other specialists and experts, attended the meeting at Mikati’s request.
Hamieh highlighted that this issue would be a focal point at the upcoming Cabinet session in Tyre on Saturday. He stressed the importance of preparing a transparent and legally compliant tender document in line with the Public Procurement Law, given the current state of emergency. Once the Cabinet reaches a decision, the debris removal process will promptly begin.
He also noted that Mikati instructed all necessary documents and preparations related to the tender and involved entities to be finalized by 9:30 AM on Saturday, before the session, to enable the Cabinet to make informed decisions and take appropriate actions.
Regarding dumping sites, Hamieh explained that there would be comprehensive coordination between the Ministry of Public Works and the Ministry of Environment to identify suitable locations across Lebanese territories in collaboration with municipal unions and local municipalities.
In addressing the issue of debris in the southern suburbs, he mentioned that the only solution is to place it near Costa Brava, pending the Cabinet's decision on Saturday.
Costa Brava is a waste landfill situated south of Beirut.
