EU and US to Paris to Support Lebanon

The High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell stated on Wednesday that “the military confrontation between Hezbollah and Israel is the cause of an unacceptable number of civilian casualties and unbearable level of destruction across the country, making the situation of Lebanon – a country already affected by a multitude of crises – even more fragile.”

In a statement, he affirmed that the international conference in support of Lebanon, convened by France in Paris “is an important occasion to mobilize the urgent political and economic support to the Lebanese people and country’s sovereignty.”

“As EU High Representative for Foreign Policy and Vice President of the European Commission, I will carry a message defining the main steps aiming at reaching that goal and the European Union’s contribution to it,” he added.

For its part, deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources Richard Verma said in a statement on Thursday that he “will travel to Paris on October 23-25 to participate in the International Conference in Support of Lebanon’s People and Sovereignty hosted by the Government of France.”

Deputy Secretary Verma will meet with partner states, as well as representatives of international organizations, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector, to discuss the need to reach a diplomatic resolution that will enable civilians on both sides of the Blue Line to return home,” the statement added.

Verma will also discuss “the importance of providing humanitarian assistance to the Lebanese people and supporting Lebanese state institutions, including the Lebanese Armed Forces,” the statement added.
