Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, the United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon, has condemned the latest Israeli airstrikes on the southern Lebanese city of Nabatiyeh, which resulted in the deaths of ten people, including the city's mayor and a paramedic. The Lebanese Ministry of Health confirmed the casualties, warning that the toll could rise as search efforts continue.
In a statement, Plasschaert stressed that the ongoing targeting of civilians and civilian infrastructure violates international humanitarian law and is "completely unacceptable." She called for an immediate ceasefire, urging all parties to shift towards diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict.
Plasschaert underscored that military actions cannot bring safety or security and called for urgent peace negotiations to address regional stability and protect the lives of those caught in the crossfire.
Israel has escalated its attacks in southern Lebanon, the Beqaa, and the southern suburb of Beirut in recent weeks, killing more than 2300 people, including civilians and rescue workers, and wounding over 10,000.
