The caretaker Finance Minister, Youssef Khalil, on Monday handed over to the chairman of the parliamentary Finance and Budget Committee, Ibrahim Kanaan, the lists detailing the Treasury advances granted between 2020 and 2023 and the donations made to Lebanon between 2018 and 2023. The committee had requested these lists during the sessions discussing the 2024 draft budget, Kanaan's press office said in a statement.
They show that Treasury advances reached almost 32 trillion pounds for 2023 alone, or 72% of the spending capacities authorized by law, based on the provisional twelfth.
"The Finance Committee will monitor this issue closely, especially as these figures constitute significant government spending outside the budget and laws in force,” the text reads.
