The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) on Friday called on Lebanese authorities to uphold their responsibility to guarantee the safety of peacekeepers following an armed incident targeting a peacekeeping patrol in southern Lebanon.
In a press release, UNIFIL condemned attacks on its personnel as “unacceptable” and “serious violations” of UN Security Council Resolution 1701 and demanded “a full and immediate investigation to bring perpetrators to justice.”
The warning follows an incident late Thursday near Bint Jbeil, when a peacekeeping patrol was confronted by six men on three mopeds. According to the mission, one of the assailants fired approximately three shots at the rear of a UNIFIL vehicle. No casualties were reported.
UNIFIL added that it continues to monitor and report on developments in south Lebanon and remains committed to assisting both Lebanon and Israel in implementing Resolution 1701.
The mission also stressed that both sides “must adhere to their commitments and obligations under the resolution and to the understanding reached in November if they are to safeguard the progress achieved so far.”
