U.S. Special Envoy to Lebanon Morgan Ortagus on Wednesday reaffirmed Washington’s support for the Lebanese government’s decision to place all weapons under state control by the end of the year.
Speaking during the 12th meeting of the Committee for the Supervision of the Ceasefire (the Mechanism) in Naqoura, Ortagus emphasized that the United States “continues to monitor developments in Lebanon,” urging that the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) “must now fully implement its disarmament plan.”
According to a statement issued by the U.S. Embassy, the meeting, hosted by UNIFIL, reviewed the progress achieved by the LAF in maintaining ceasefire arrangements and advancing disarmament efforts. It was attended by Ortagus, U.S. General Joseph Clearfield, who chairs the committee, and senior representatives from all delegations.
The embassy said all members reiterated their collective commitment to supporting Lebanon’s stability and agreed to structure future meetings more systematically. The next sessions are set to take place before the end of the year.
General Clearfield underscored that formalizing the meeting schedule “ensures that all participants are aligned, fully informed, and prepared to provide transparent updates to the international community,” adding that such coordination “enhances operational efficiency and builds the mutual trust necessary for lasting peace in Lebanon.”
He also commended the Lebanese Army’s “professionalism and dedication.”
During the meeting, the LAF presented a detailed operational update highlighting a recent operation near Wadi al-Aziyeh to clear an underground facility.
The committee further discussed measures to curb ongoing violations, agreeing to keep the issue as a standing item on all future agendas to strengthen accountability and sustain peace efforts under the ceasefire framework.
The statement concluded by reaffirming the Mechanism’s “pivotal role in monitoring, verifying, and enforcing the commitments made by both Israel and Lebanon.”
Meanwhile, during the session, five Israeli soldiers attempted to intercept a Lebanese Army vehicle as it passed through the English Cemetery area between Bastara and Majidiyeh and opened fire toward it after advancing into Lebanese territory.
