Brigitte Bardot, the iconic French actress long retired from public life, was recently hospitalized in southern France for a minor surgical procedure. Now 91, she has returned to her home in Saint-Tropez to recuperate, her office said on Friday, calling for respect for her privacy.

Former French screen icon Brigitte Bardot was briefly hospitalized for an operation but is back home and convalescing, her office told AFP in a statement on Friday.

The health of the 91-year-old, who lives in Saint-Tropez in the south of France, had been the subject of persistent rumors in recent days.

The former actor spent a few days at the private Saint-Jean Hospital in Toulon "to undergo a minor surgical procedure that went particularly well," her office said.

"She is now resting at home, will not respond to any requests, and would thank everyone to respect her privacy and peace," it added.

Bardot also wished to "thank everyone who is concerned about her health and to reassure them".

The star of And God Created Woman and Contempt, who abandoned the cinema industry in 1973, told AFP ahead of her 90th birthday that she lived in "silent solitude", surrounded by nature and content to be "fleeing humanity".
