Port of Beirut management issued a statement on Wednesday to clarify the reasons behind delays in the electronic processing of port transactions, emphasizing that these were not due to a work stoppage but to a temporary malfunction in the “Najm” system, which is used to transmit data to the Customs Directorate.
According to the statement, the so-called “verification” procedure is part of the information exchange between the two administrations. “In most cases, the delays are due to a temporary technical glitch and not a halt in activity,” the management explained. It also stressed that transactions are indeed finalized on the port side and that all necessary steps are followed in real time to ensure smooth operations and protect the interests of economic operators.
The management assured that daily operations are continuing normally and that any technical issues are addressed immediately.
Additionally, the port authority announced that it has entered the bid submission phase for the implementation of a new information system. The prequalification process for candidate companies is now complete, with six international firms still in the running. This project, which is part of a broader strategy to modernize the port, is expected to take several months to ensure the selection of a digital system that meets international technological standards.
The management emphasized that the current delays are not due to administrative blockage, but stem from the necessary legal and technical procedures to guarantee compliance and transparency throughout the process.
Finally, the port authority highlighted its commitment to working closely with unions and customs services to ensure uninterrupted operations and protect the interests of all users. It called for understanding and cooperation from all partners during this transition period and assured that the port’s economic activity will continue without interruption.
