Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas “has no excuse to reject the proposal made to it” under the plan to end the war in the Gaza Strip, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said Tuesday.

“Hamas is now completely isolated, categorically disavowed; it must face the reality: it has lost,” he told France Inter radio, recalling the overwhelming September 12 vote at the UN General Assembly in favor of a text supporting a future Palestinian state from which Hamas would be excluded.

With the public release of Donald Trump’s peace plan on Monday, endorsed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Hamas “must seize the opportunity to disarm and go into exile,” he added.

Barrot also held a phone call Tuesday with his U.S. counterpart, Marco Rubio. “We coordinated to ensure the parties seize this opportunity, pressing Hamas in particular, and to plan for the implementation of this peace plan,” he said, welcoming the American plan for incorporating many of the “key principles” previously proposed by France and Saudi Arabia to resolve the conflict.

The minister will travel to Saudi Arabia starting Wednesday to meet with Arab counterparts so that “all stakeholders -Arab and European countries- take part in what should be a path toward peace and stability in the region,” he said.
