The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) marked the International Day of Peace this Sunday with an official ceremony held at its headquarters in Naqoura. It was the first celebration in two years, as the security situation in 2024 had forced the cancellation of previous commemorations.
Speaking at the ceremony, UNIFIL Head of Mission and Force Commander Major General Diodato Abagnara highlighted the close partnership between the peacekeepers and the Lebanese Army in maintaining peace in the region. “Security incidents test our vigilance,” he stated.
He added that “UNIFIL must adapt to evolving circumstances, but our mission remains the same: to serve peace, protect civilians and uphold the ideals of the United Nations.”
General Abagnara also addressed the challenges related to the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, the legal basis of the mission’s mandate. The highlight of the day was the release of doves, a universal symbol of peace, carried out jointly by General Abagnara, UN representatives and Lebanese Brigadier General Nicolas Tabet. The ceremony also honored 37 officers who had taken part in peacekeeping operations with the award of the United Nations Medal.
Established in 1981 by the UN General Assembly, the International Day of Peace is dedicated to non-violence and ceasefire. Since 2001, it has been officially recognized as a global truce period. The 2025 edition carried the theme “Act Now for a Peaceful World,” calling on everyone to take action in promoting tolerance, justice and human rights.
