UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen announced Wednesday that he is resigning “for personal reasons” after nearly seven and a half years in the post.
Speaking before the UN Security Council, the Norwegian diplomat said he was “deeply indebted and deeply grateful to the Syrian people, who have shown extraordinary courage and humanity over these years.”
“As my family and colleagues know, it has been my intention for some time to move on,” he said.
But “given the extraordinary changes in Syria and the opening of a new chapter, it was both my duty and a privilege to remain in office and help guide the United Nations’ political efforts during the crucial first months of this historic period of political transition.”
Following the fall of Bashar al-Assad in 2024, a transitional government was established to lead Syria.
Aged 69, Geir Pedersen had been appointed to the post in October 2018.
