A group of politicians and public figures filed a criminal complaint at the Palace of Justice on Wednesday against Hezbollah’s Secretary-General, Sheikh Naim Qassem, for inciting civil war and sectarian tensions.

Elie Mahfoud, the head of the Change Movement, emphasized, “This is not a mere incident report, but a direct complaint accompanied by the filing of a civil action as a private prosecutor against Naim Qassem.”

At the Courthouse on Wednesday, MP Ashraf Rifi stated that “the Iranian role in the region has ended,” adding that addressing Qassem’s remarks required “a constitutional plan to show that the state unites while the ‘mini-state’ divides.”

On August 19, after a meeting of lawmakers, political figures and representatives of the Sovereign Front for Lebanon, Mahfoud had announced that they would file a complaint with the Public Prosecutor against Qassem, accusing him of inciting sectarian strife and endangering civil peace.

During a televised address, Qassem had warned on August 15 that there would be “no life” in Lebanon if the government sought to confront or eliminate Hezbollah. He accused officials of executing “an American-Israeli order to eliminate the resistance” and cautioned that any attempt to strip Hezbollah of its weapons risked plunging Lebanon into civil war and igniting sectarian conflict.
