Prime Minister Nawaf Salam met with US Congress members Darin LaHood and Steve Cohen at the Grand Serail on Friday, in the presence of US Ambassador to Lebanon Lisa Johnson and the accompanying delegation.
During the meeting, LaHood commended the Lebanese government for extending state authority nationwide, centralizing arms under state control and implementing ongoing judicial and financial reforms. He emphasized that these measures help restore international confidence in Lebanon. LaHood also highlighted the crucial role of the Lebanese Army in maintaining security and stability, noting his continued efforts in Congress to ensure its sustained support.
The discussion also included the importance of renewing UNIFIL’s mandate to assist the army in strengthening its presence in southern Lebanon.
Prime Minister Salam stressed the need for Israel to respect Lebanon’s sovereignty and withdraw from occupied territories, allowing the army to complete its deployment in the south, stop hostile actions and secure the release of prisoners. He reaffirmed that the Lebanese Army represents all citizens and that equipping it with the necessary capabilities is essential to safeguarding security and stability.
