President Joseph Aoun stated on Saturday that “Lebanon has not been officially informed of anything regarding Israel’s reported intention to establish a buffer zone in the South, as circulated in the media.”
During his meeting with US Congressman Darin LaHood and the accompanying delegation, he stressed the importance of renewing UNIFIL’s mandate in the South until the full implementation of Resolution 1701.
He added that these measures include “Israel’s withdrawal from the territories it still occupies,” as well as “the release of prisoners and the full deployment of the Lebanese Armed Forces up to the internationally recognized borders.”
Aoun further stated that “Lebanon is awaiting Israel’s response to the proposal conveyed by US envoys Tom Barrack and Morgan Ortagus.”
For his part, LaHood congratulated President Aoun on the Lebanese government’s decision to ensure that weapons remain under the exclusive control of the state, reaffirming the US administration’s readiness to support Lebanon in its pursuit of stability and economic recovery.
