Maronite Patriarch Bechara Boutros Rai said on Tuesday that Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanon would facilitate the disarmament of Hezbollah, stressing that there is a firm national consensus on carrying out the decision to strip the group of its weapons. He noted that the Lebanese government’s stance is clear in confining all arms to the state.

In an interview with Al Arabiya/Al Hadath, Rai dismissed Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem’s recent comments as “political posturing,” insisting that “there will be no civil war” in Lebanon. He urged Hezbollah to surrender its weapons to the Lebanese state, adding, “Resistance is not submission to Iran’s dictates.” He argued that Hezbollah had undermined the true meaning of resistance.

Rai directly addressed the group, saying, “My message to Hezbollah: Declare your ultimate loyalty to Lebanon.”

The Patriarch also described Iran’s role in Lebanon as “blatant interference,” noting that many within the Shiite community are “tired of war and want to live in peace.” He confirmed that he had received an invitation from Tehran but said current conditions make a visit impossible.

The Army Protects All Lebanese Equally

Rai urged the United Nations to shield Lebanon from regional and international conflicts, stressing that “nobody wants war.” He emphasized Lebanon’s model of coexistence, enshrined in the Constitution, and underscored that the Lebanese Army protects all citizens without discrimination.

Regarding the war Hezbollah launched in support of Hamas in Gaza, Rai said it had only brought “destruction upon the Lebanese people.” He added that “there would be no objection to peace with Israel in the future, when circumstances are appropriate.”
