Minister of Economy and Trade Amer Bisat announced on Wednesday that Lebanon has received a $1.5 million grant from the State of Kuwait to fund detailed feasibility studies for the construction of new grain silos across the country.
Provided through the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development, the grant marks the first step toward rebuilding and expanding Lebanon’s grain storage capacity. This move comes after the destruction of Beirut’s main silos in the 2020 port explosion, which left the country heavily dependent on just-in-time imports and vulnerable to supply disruptions.
“This initiative represents the first phase of a strategic plan to build silos in various Lebanese regions as soon as possible,” Bisat said following his meeting with the Kuwait Fund. “It will strengthen national food security, safeguard grain reserves, ensure stable supply chains and reduce the risks posed by global crises or local emergencies.”
The minister emphasized that the Kuwaiti grant is more than just financial assistance. “This support reflects the deep fraternal ties between Lebanon and Kuwait and demonstrates Kuwait’s enduring commitment to stand with Lebanon in confronting its challenges, especially in vital sectors that directly affect citizens’ lives,” he said.
Lebanon’s government has prioritized rebuilding grain storage facilities to prevent shortages and stabilize prices in the event of international market volatility or logistical disruptions. The upcoming feasibility studies will determine optimal locations, capacities and technical specifications for the new silos, with the goal of beginning construction promptly.
