The Secretary of the Iranian Guardian Council, Ahmad Jannati, dismissed the prospect of disarming the pro-Iranian militia Hezbollah as an “illusory dream” in remarks at a council meeting on Monday.
Jannati’s comments coincided with the anniversary of the 33-day war between Hezbollah and Israel in 2006, which he described as a “symbol of the victory of the global resistance front,” stating that it was inspired by the Iranian Revolution and “will ultimately end in victory.”
The statements follow those of Ali Akbar Velayati, the senior advisor to Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, whose recent remarks opposing Hezbollah’s disarmament drew strong criticism from Lebanon’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Last week, the Lebanese government approved a measure mandating the state’s monopoly on weapons and tasked the army with developing a plan to confiscate Hezbollah’s arsenal. The plan is to be presented by the end of this month and implemented by the end of 2025.
Hezbollah has rejected the government’s decision, calling it “nonexistent” and reiterating its commitment to retaining its weapons.
