Donald Trump “expressed his discontent and disagreement with the leaders of France, the United Kingdom and Canada” over their plans to recognize a Palestinian state, White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said Thursday.
The U.S. president has thus somewhat hardened his stance on the matter.
While he had already sharply criticized Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s announcement of his intention to recognize a Palestinian state, Trump had been less virulent toward similar decisions by French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
He had mainly argued that the French president’s statements on recognizing a Palestinian state carried little “weight” and “would change nothing.”
Regarding the United Kingdom, which plans to recognize a Palestinian state in September if Israel does not make a series of commitments, Trump had only said he was “not in that camp.”
According to Karoline Leavitt, he is now more critical and believes such a move amounts to “rewarding Hamas at a time when Hamas is the real obstacle to a ceasefire and the release of all hostages” in the Gaza Strip.
