French President Emmanuel Macron said Saturday it was “imperative to prevent a recurrence of violence” in Syria, calling for those responsible for recent unrest to be held accountable, following talks with Syria's interim president Ahmad al-Sharaa.
“The recent violence in Syria highlights the extreme fragility of the transition. Civilian populations must be protected,” Macron wrote on X, urging for a “calm local dialogue” to support Syria’s unification while respecting the rights of all its citizens.
Syria witnessed intercommunal violence between July 13 and 20 in the country’s south, leaving over 1,300 people dead, the majority of them Druze.
