The United States "strongly" rejected on Thursday French President Emmanuel Macron’s plan to recognize a Palestinian state, calling it a "reckless" decision that undermines peace.
“This reckless decision only serves Hamas propaganda and sets back peace. It is a slap in the face to the victims of October 7th,” declared U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the social network X.
Earlier on Thursday, the French president announced that France will recognize the State of Palestine in September during the United Nations General Assembly, expressing hope that this would create a collective momentum in that direction.
Israel immediately denounced the move as a “reward for terror.”
France is due to co-chair, along with Saudi Arabia, an international summit at the level of heads of state and government aimed at reviving the so‑called “two-state” solution, Israeli and Palestinian.
The United States has long opposed—including under the previous Joe Biden administration—any unilateral recognition of a Palestinian state, preferring a negotiated settlement.
The Trump administration maintains ambiguity over whether it supports a two-state solution, a goal long backed by U.S. diplomacy.
Washington, Israel’s main ally, thus displays a deep divergence with many European capitals, at a time when negotiations aimed at securing a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip have collapsed.
