The European Union and Member State Ambassadors met with Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri on Thursday to confirm their strong support for Lebanon, especially in areas affected by conflict.

According to a press release published by the Delegation of the European Union to Lebanon, the EU and its Member States have so far provided more than 600 million US dollars to Lebanon, which is almost half of their total aid exceeding 1 billion dollars.

According to the document, “this funding is helping to improve many important areas like education, healthcare, social protection, water, sanitation and agriculture. It is also helping to create jobs and support businesses to boost Lebanon’s economy.”

“A significant part of the support is going toward improving Lebanon’s security. This includes helping the Lebanese Armed Forces to better protect the country, clearing unexploded ordnances and strengthening the management of borders. Some of this security funding is separate from the 600 million dollars,” explained the EU Delegation.

During their meeting with Berri, the Ambassadors also praised the “important work of the UNIFIL, which helps keep peace in the south.” They stressed how important it is for all parties to follow UN Security Council Resolution 1701, including the need for the government to have full control over weapons and to respect the ceasefire reached in November 2024.

During the talks, the Ambassadors discussed “Lebanon’s plans to make much-needed reforms in the financial, judicial and government systems.” They welcomed progress like the approval of the Banking Secrecy Law and filling key judicial positions. Still, they urged Lebanon’s Parliament to quickly pass a Bank Resolution Law that meets international standards. They also asked about the law to make the judiciary independent and the new media law that would protect press freedom.

Berri expressed his gratitude for the EU’s assistance, especially in areas affected by Israeli aggression. He also emphasized Lebanon’s strong commitment to advancing reforms and building a deeper partnership with the EU to help the country recover.
