Prime Minister Nawaf Salam reaffirmed Lebanon’s full commitment to United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701 during a meeting Tuesday with the commander of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), General Diodato Abagnara, and a delegation from the peacekeeping mission.

Salam emphasized the Lebanese government’s commitment to providing a secure and stable environment that enables UNIFIL to carry out its mandate effectively, highlighting the importance of safeguarding the lives and operations of its personnel.

He noted that Lebanon had officially submitted a request to the UN for a one-year extension of UNIFIL’s mandate through August 31, 2026, based on a Cabinet decision adopted on May 14, 2025.

Discussions also addressed ongoing coordination between UNIFIL and the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF), with a focus on enhancing joint operations in the south.

Salam concluded by stressing that true stability in southern Lebanon cannot be achieved without a full Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory and an end to ongoing violations.

It is worth noting that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had officially submitted a request to extend UNIFIL’s mandate for an additional year, starting August 31, 2025. The request, made on Friday, June 7, is based on a decision adopted by the Council of Ministers during its May 14 session.
