The United States has launched a "war" against Iran "under absurd and fabricated pretexts," Iran's ambassador to the United Nations accused on Sunday before the UN Security Council.

"The United States, a permanent member of this Council, has once again resorted to the illegal use of force, launching a war against my country under absurd and fabricated pretexts: to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons," said Amir Saeid Iravani during an emergency meeting of the Council, convened at Iran’s request following U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.

"Once again, the wanted war criminal (Benjamin) Netanyahu has succeeded in taking American foreign policy hostage, dragging the United States into another costly and unjustified war. America has once again recklessly chosen to sacrifice its own security to protect Netanyahu," he added.

He also called on the Council to "firmly condemn the flagrant acts of aggression, violations, and heinous crimes committed against the Islamic Republic of Iran" and to take "action" against the "aggressors."
