Iran will defend itself by all means necessary, its foreign minister said on Sunday, following the US strikes against key sites in Iran's nuclear program.

"Iran continues to defend Iran's territory, sovereignty, security and people by all means necessary against not just US military aggression but also the reckless and unlawful actions of the Israeli regime," said Iranian diplomatic chief Abbas Araghchi on the sidelines of a meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Istanbul.

In a recent press conference, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemned the U.S. military strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, calling the attacks a "brutal aggression" and a violation of international law.

Araghchi placed responsibility for the attack on the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), accusing its Board of Governors of enabling the U.S. action. He also criticized Rafael Grossi, the head of the IAEA, for what he described as his support for "war and violence."

“We call on the United Nations Security Council to hold a special session to condemn the U.S. attack," Araghchi stated, emphasizing that the attack violated existing Security Council resolutions. He further accused former U.S. President Donald Trump of deceiving his supporters and voters, claiming the attack was part of a broader strategy that undermined international stability.

Araghchi also asserted that no independent nation could accept such an assault on its sovereignty. "Washington must bear the dangerous consequences of its actions," he warned.

In his remarks, the Iranian minister expressed surprise over the U.S. strike on Iran's nuclear sites, suggesting that the attack was unexpected despite ongoing tensions. He referenced recent diplomatic efforts, noting that important meetings had been held in Turkey, where several ideas were discussed, but did not elaborate on the specifics of these talks.
